Job Seekers How to Prepare Your References

References.  An underestimated item that job seekers don’t think about until they need them.  Most candidates write down names of people they know and trust, without considering who those references should be and without letting them know or asking them to be references or write a reference letter.  What’s worse is not preparing those job references for potential calls from employers.

This is a critical part of the hiring process and will help the employer determine whether you are not only qualified but if you are a good professional and cultural fit for the company. It is therefore important to have your references in order when looking for a job

Who to Choose For a Job Reference

Credibility is key.  With Linkedin and Facebook, it’s easy for an employer to figure out who the reference is and how they are connected to you.  Of course, you can use your previous supervisor and colleagues but think beyond this option.  People who have worked for you can make great references too!  Or do you have a high-profile customer or partner you’ve worked with?

Though most employers only ask for 3 references, we recommend always having 5-6 for different positions and specific industries. That way you can quickly pick and choose an appropriate reference for the job application.

Prep Your References

The purpose is not to tell your references what to say, but they do need context and you should share key points with them.

  1. First, call and ask your contact if they are willing to be a reference, tell them why you chose them to be your reference, and show your appreciation.
  2. Ask your reference what they would say about you to a prospective employer.
  3. Tell your reference the types of jobs and in what industries you are applying for jobs.
  4. Let your references know the key experiences and attributes you want them to highlight.
  5. Ask your references if they would create a recommendation for you on Linkedin.  This will speed up the process and allow the recruiter or employer to validate this information.

Expected Details

You should have the details of each reference in one place that is easily accessible, in a reference list.  Some candidates wait until asked, we recommend having a reference page prepared to include with your resume or recruitment package.

  1. Full, legal name
  2. Title
  3. Company
  4. Phone Number
  5. Address
  6. Linkedin Profile
  7. How you know this person

Do Jobs Actually Call References

That depends on what stage of the application process you are at and what kind of position you are interviewing for. Since the company asked for references in the first place it is likely that they might check the reference. It is therefore important to have your references in good order before applying, to not use fake job references and to inform your references before using them. A reference check does not guarantee a job offer but it could improve your chances!
